Backyard Mud Kitchen with Pots and Pans for Ages 2 to 8
One afternoon in June, ours pulled on their dirtiest clothes and stayed out back for two hours at least, scooping mud from pots into pans into muffin tins. We got in there with them and got muddy too. It was a bit much, and it was a great way to kick off summer. One bag of garden mix and the pots you already own, and everybody gets muddy, you included.

A 4-year-old and a 2-year-old rarely want the same game. In the mud they don't have to agree on one. Ours each found their own way into it, and both got nice and muddy. Kids play harder outdoors, and outdoor time is linked with better motor development.
You don't need to build anything. And you're allowed in. We were. Nobody's clothes need a "careful" today, yours included.
We've done it a bunch of times. Once they were all in. Other times, only a little. Both count.
Discover moment: Ask, "What happens if we add more water?" Too wet slumps. Too dry crumbles. In between, it holds.
Connect moment: Order a mud cupcake and try to pay with a leaf. The price just went up.

Too much (2-3): Scoop and pat. Skip the muffin tin.
Too easy (6-8): They run the cafe. One cooks, one pays in leaves, then swap.
Ways to play it (we've done the bakery and potions):
Hose off pots and feet. Muddy clothes get their own load. Store the bag out of reach.
What I tell friends: One bag of garden mix bought us a whole afternoon. Get in the mud with them.
The bag: An adult opens bagged soil outside, with gloves and a mask, and wets it before anyone digs. Bagged soil can carry Legionella bacteria. Read the bag's warnings.
Fertilizer: Some garden soils have plant food mixed in. For toddlers, pick a bag without it.
Water: Toddlers can drown in an inch or two of water, quickly and silently. Stay within arm's reach of the bucket, and dump it when you're done.
Under 3: Keep pebbles, acorns, bottle caps and dropper parts away. Older siblings often hand small things to younger ones.
Mouthfuls: A 2-year-old will probably taste it. Wipe the mouth, rinse, and give a drink. Poison Control: 1-800-222-1222.
Plants: Only use leaves and petals you know. Some irritate skin or make kids sick.
Sun and heat: Pick shade or a cooler hour, use SPF 15 or higher, offer water before they ask, and go inside if it's hot.
Hands: Wash with soap for 20 seconds before snacks and at the end, gloves or not.
